Best electric toothbrush for braces

In this post I recommend the best electric toothbrush for braces, having tested the market’s top brushes and having previously worn braces myself.

Dentists regularly remind all of us to brush regularly and correctly, but it becomes even more important when wearing a brace.

The surface area and design of a brace, particularly fixed braces, offers an increased surface area for bacteria to form.

You want to remove debris and bacteria to help keep your teeth and gums in good shape.

You need to brush at least twice a day — ideally three times a day when wearing a brace.

Manual brushes are perfectly fine, but when wearing a brace the benefits of electric really can make a difference.

Immediately below are my main recommendations. I then explain each in more detail, and provide further information in my buyer’s guide.

Our Top 5 Picks For Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces

The choices available today have never been so great and it really can be difficult to pick an electric toothbrush.

I have done much of the hard work for you, having spent many hundreds of hours testing products from the leading household brands, right through to those newcomers you probably have never heard of before.

Based on this testing, my experience, and the feedback from others here are our top 5 electric toothbrushes for braces, with a little explanation as to why I chose each.

1. Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100

Short review: Essentially speaking this brush is as close as you can get to perfect in my opinion.

The slim handled toothbrush looks good and sits comfortably in the hand.

It does a great job of cleaning the teeth and is almost silent in its operation, with nothing more than a subtle humming sound coming from the brush.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 6

No special brush heads are required for braces, you can use any of the Sonicare range of heads, but those provided with the 5100 do come with an extra special feature built-in.

That feature is a microchip in the head, that communicates with the brush handle to actually alert you when you need to replace the head.  No more forgetting to replace it every 3 months. This alert stops you from overusing the brush and doing damage to your teeth and gums.

Wonderful this feature is, but these sophisticated brush heads cost a few dollars more, than the standard heads, which you can use on this brush handle.

The rechargeable built-in battery lasts a good few weeks, so it does not need constant recharging and makes for 1 less thing to worry about.

The provided travel case makes it easy to pack the brush away and take it with you, which is something you might want to do when wearing a brace so you can brush after lunch or at times you would not have done so before being a brace wearer.

A 2 minute timer and 30 second pacer are built-in, as is an automatic power off feature, small but incredibly useful features.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 7

Thanks to a built-in pressure sensor, you can avoid brushing too hard. It vibrates the handle when it detects excessive force, a visual alert would have been nice, but it’s a small complaint.

Ultimately, the ProtectiveClean 5100 is a great blend of function and performance for a price.

What we like

  • Travel case

  • Automatic power off
  • Brush head reminder system

2. Oral-B Pro 1500

Short review: Starting with the biggest negative, and that is the lack of a travel case being provided in the box with the Pro 1500.

Whilst not essential, it is handy, particularly if you travel or want to carry a toothbrush with you to be able to clean your teeth throughout the day.  You can buy aftermarket cases though for just a few dollars.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 8

What it lacks is made up for in the lovely slim, grippy brush handle that is a pleasure to use.

The small round brush head is clinically proven to clean the teeth well removing a lot of the plaque that builds up.  It comes supplied with Oral-B’s CrossAction brush head, but the firm tend to advise you use their Ortho brush head, which can be purchased separately for brushing braces.

A 2 minute timer and 30 second pacer are built-in as standard and there is too a visible pressure sensor that shines red, should you brush too hard.

With a rechargeable battery built-in, you get about 2 weeks use between charges, which is more than you get from a lot of other ‘cheaper’ electric toothbrushes.

  • Design
  • Battery life
  • Pressure sensor

What we dislike

  • Lack of travel case

3. Sonicare DiamondClean Smart

This is the ultimate electric toothbrush and let’s not kid around when we say this one is pretty expensive too.

For those serious about investing in their oral health, the DiamondClean Smart is a tool you will absolutely love.

If it was not for the price and the fact you don’t ‘need’ all of the features it offers, this would have taken the number 1 spot.

The brush has multiple cleaning modes which means it can serve you well during the time you wear your brace and after.  From deep cleaning to whitening, it has it.

Incredibly stylish, the fit and finish and overall quality is superb.

Such attention to detail extends to the cleaning experience.  There is no denying that after use your teeth feel clean and that standard 2 minute cleaning time is monitored by the brush, with 30 second pacing built- in.

At the end of the cleaning session, it automatically turns the brush off to conserve power and save you that extra button press.

Multiple brush heads are included in the box, to help achieve your cleaning goals.  All of these benefit from Sonicare’s BrushSync technology, which tells you precisely when the brush head needs replacing.  It will also select the most appropriate cleaning mode for the brush head.

As clever as this is, the heads are more expensive than the perfectly usable standard heads that do not have BrushSync technology built-in.

Technology is a key selling point and this Bluetooth enabled brush can log all of your cleaning sessions in the Sonicare smartphone application.

If you are serious about recording your brushing routine and perhaps proving to the dentist how well you brush, this allows it as it can actually track where the brush is in the mouth as you clean your teeth, telling you where you have likely missed and could improve.

A rechargeable built-in battery lasts a good few weeks between charging.  A stylish charging glass is provided, but you don’t need that when the brush can be charged in the travel case via USB, thanks to the hardwired charging cable.

4. Oral-B Pro 6000

One of the more premium models from the Oral-B range of toothbrushes, the Pro 6000 is ideal for those who want a quality brush, but would rather keep a few dollars extra in their wallet.

Very similar to the flagship Genius Pro 8000, there is little lost on this more cost effective alternative.

The rounded handle has a nice comfortable rubber grip that runs down the back of it making for comfortable everyday use.

A number of cleaning modes allow you to achieve different oral healthcare goals, but it is the Daily and Pro Clean that stand out for me.

Over 2 weeks use from a fully charged battery is possible, this is ok, but not quite as good as some other models.

Whilst it comes with a basic but functional travel case, there is no facility to charge the brush in the case.

Small rounded brush heads are the design of choice for Oral-B.  Clinically proven, supplied is a CrossAction brush head, but it is the Ortho head, sold separately, that you might prefer.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 13

Each clean is timed thanks to the built-in timer and the pacer helps ensure you give equal attention to the different areas of the mouth, whilst the pressure sensor makes sure you don’t brush too hard.

It does also have Bluetooth connectivity, which is not for everyone.  It can track your cleans and allow you to build up a log of how well you have been doing.  The app is not quite as reliable as Sonicare’s offering in my opinion, but certainly very good and helpful with tips, tricks, and reminders built in too.

What we like

  • 5 cleaning modes
  • Pressure sensor
  • Travel case
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Round brush heads

What we dislike

5. 30 Second Smile

Far from your conventional electric toothbrush, this is different, but different in a good way.

Whilst it is not made by a market leading brand, for those who know they are a bit lazy with their brushing, this could be a game changer.

The way in which the brush heads are designed and fitted mean that in use, the bristles are positioned at the ideal 45 degree angle.

Able to clean the front, back, and top of the teeth at the same time, you can brush all of your teeth in less time, just 30 seconds in fact.

Toothbrushing might not require the most effort, but this brush certainly saves some of it too.  Parents of lethargic teenagers will love this!

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 15

A timer/pacer is built-in, but this kicks in at 15 second intervals due to the different brushing times.

Provided is a charging stand complete with storage space for spare brush heads.

The built-in battery does too last longer than the advertised usage time, which is positive.

A very flimsy and basic pouch is provided so that you can take the brush with you, which is better than nothing, but it would be nice if a more robust case was provided.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 16

You really have to use this brush to believe just how well it works because it is so different.  If you want to give it a shot, make sure you pick up the Ortho brush heads (view them here on Amazon) too.

Buyer’s Guide

Can you use an electric toothbrush with braces?

This is a very common question to ask, and why I include it before my best toothbrush for braces recommendations, but I wish to confirm you can use an electric toothbrush with braces.

Manual brushes are fine also, but electric toothbrushes have a whole array of benefits.

If you want to take advantage of these benefits, which is the best electric toothbrush for braces?

Why are Brushing and Flossing so Important for Braces?

As good as electric toothbrushes are, there is only so much they can do.  They won’t be able to get in all of the gaps, particularly those in between teeth, known as interdental spaces.

You might not be a fan of flossing, but trust me, as a previous brace wearer myself, I know only too well the pain of having to do this.  But, when you have a bit of dinner stuck in your brace, you will gladly spend a couple of minutes getting rid of the food debris that builds up.

The brackets and wires are there to do a job and sadly the surface area creates lots of great places for bacteria to hide and built up.

It all accumulates rather quickly and if not removed it can lead to issues such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Whilst not absolutely essential, most fixed brace wearers will find they brush and floss at least once more each day than they would before wearing a brace.

If you can brush first thing in the morning (before eating), last thing at night (before bed) and then at another time during the day (ideally 30+ minutes after eating) then you are on the road to ensuring good oral hygiene is maintained.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 17

Even when you do not wear a brace, some 35-40% of the tooth surface is missed with regular brushing.  This is why flossing or interdental cleaning is advised.

The very act, reaches into those tight gaps between teeth, cleaning the areas normal brushing simply has not reached.

TePe’s range of brushes are very good (view their variety pack here on Amazon), whilst Oral-B Superfloss (view on Amazon) is great for getting in around the brackets and wires of the brace.

You may too find some value investing in a water flosser.  I like those from Waterpik, but there are a number of choices.  If you have a few minutes, take a look at our best water flossers for braces article, as one of these could be a great accompanying product to an electric toothbrush and make your flossing routine just that little bit easier.

Electric Toothbrushes are the ultimate choice for braces

By the very presence of a brace, you are at a higher risk of plaque formation that those without.

When brands can make claims of up to 100% more plaque removal than a manual brush, it has to be worth taking advantage of right?  Why wouldn’t you want to remove more plaque?

100% is a pretty hard figure to believe, but the research has been done, but something that sounds more realistic, yet still incredibly impressive is the independent research by Cochrane that found 21% less plaque after 3 months use.

An electric motor delivers a consistent power output, unlike the human hand when brushing manually, we get distracted or tired and are unable to keep up the consistent power and speed of movement and quite simply no human can move that brush head upwards of 30,000 times a minute!

Is there such a thing as an ‘orthodontic electric toothbrush’?

Some companies will try to sell you a toothbrush in a way that makes it appear that it is made specifically for those who wear braces or orthodontic appliances, normally so they can make a few dollars.

The reality is that there isn’t 1 electric toothbrush (that I know of) specifically designed for those who wear fixed braces.

Oral-B does make a brush head specifically for braces — the Ortho head (view it here on Amazon) which fits to any of their brush handles, whilst most other brands state that any of their brush heads are suitable for braces.

How to use a Sonicare toothbrush with braces

When wearing braces, you use a Sonicare brush in the exact same way you would if you did not have braces.

There is no need to fit a different brush head, adjust your technique or do anything ‘special’.

Out of the box, the brush and brush heads just work, making for simple and effective day to day use.

The following video shows a Sonicare brush in action and how you should clean your teeth.

How to use Philips Sonicare tootbhrushes with braces

How to use an Oral-B toothbrush with braces

If you opt for an Oral-B brush, you can pretty much use it out of the box with braces, but the company does suggest that you do not use the 3D White, FlossAction brush heads in particular when cleaning braces.

I personally use Oral-B and enjoy the small round brush heads that can be easily moved and manipulated into position around the teeth.  They always feel like they clean well and give an invigorating feeling to the teeth and gums post use.

Where Sonicare does not manufacture a ‘special’ brush head for brace wearers, Oral-B have designed the ‘Ortho’ head with is designed with fixed appliances in mind and should deliver the best results.

Desirable features of an electric toothbrush for braces

For less than $20 you can get a capable electric toothbrush but take it from me, generally spending a bit more will pay off in the long run.

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars, unless you really want to.  For $75 or less you can get yourself some fantastic options.

The more you spend, the better the product tends to be, but when prices start creeping over $100 you tend to get nice-to-have features rather than things you need and the actual cleaning performance tends not to improve all that much.

Brush heads

With the exception of the 3D White and FlossAction heads from Oral-B all of the standard brush heads will clean your teeth and the brace without a problem.

Those with an Oral-B brush handle may wish to try the specialist Ortho head to see if you get the benefits of the customized design it offers.

It is optional whether you use this, if you opt for an Oral-B brush but one to bear in mind.

You will be doing yourself an injustice if you don’t buy a toothbrush with this built-in.  It is a core feature of many electric toothbrushes and ensures you brush for the right amount of time and evenly.

The pacer will sometimes be referred to as a quadpacer or 30 second interval timer.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 20

Pressure sensor

Bristles of a brush head need to skim the surface of the teeth.  Hard and aggressive brushing is helping nobody aside from the toothbrush manufacturers as you will wear the head out faster.

Damage to your teeth and in particular your gums is likely to be a consequence of brushing too hard.  Many suffer with receding gums as a result.

When cleaning a brace, the added pressure could break or dislodge a fitting or archwire.

Brushes with pressure sensors built-in will detect when excessive pressure is being applied, alert you and prevent you from doing more damage than good.

Travel case

It is not essential, but it is high up on the feature list for those with braces.

The more frequent teeth cleaning means the brush has to accompany you at times when normally it would have been left at home.

You may have to take it to school, work, a friends house etc.

The case keeps your brush handle and head together, away from damage and is easy to store or hold onto, whilst in most instances, protecting the bristles from damage and the brush being switched on accidentally.

Some cases are better than others, with some allowing the brush to be charged in the case, but most offer basic protection and storage for up to 2 heads.

Battery life

Over recent years, brush manufacturers have worked to improve the battery life and today 2 weeks between charges is quite common, although many models last a lot longer (Sonicare).

It is convenient to leave the brush on the charging stand, so that is is always topped up and that is fine to do, but the situation is a bit different for you.

You might find you are brushing more regularly or for longer, thus the advertised battery life is more important, because the increased use means less time between charges.

If the average brush offers 14 days usage time, this will be based on 2 cleans of 2 minutes a day.  You only have to clean your teeth 3 times a day and a 2 week battery life soon drops to about 10 days rather than 14.

Best Electric Toothbrush For Braces 2021 21

Bluetooth connectivity

One of the latest innovations in toothbrushes and one that has been met with mixed reactions, is Bluetooth connectivity.

By no means do you have to have it, but it can be very powerful if you are serious about oral health.

The Bluetooth connectivity and the supporting apps allow you to log your clean, set target areas and generally work to ensure you are cleaning your teeth and looking after your mouth as best as you can.

The app’s primary goal is to educate and encourage better cleaning and is a little like having a dentist watching over your clean.

If you are going to spend more time cleaning your teeth, best to do it right?!

More and more brushes are offering this.  It takes some practice to get used to using and will for some just be a hassle too far, but it is a way to prove to your orthodontist that you have been brushing regularly and correctly!
