SURI 1.0 vs SURI 2.0 - brushes held side by side_1200_x_775

Our choice: SURI 2.0

The SURI 2.0 electric toothbrush is a refinement of the original SURI 1.0 model.

The form factor is almost identical, but the redesign addresses a few of the shortcomings of SURI 1.0. The new additions include a pressure sensor, inductive charging, a more powerful motor, an improved travel case, and a travel lock feature.

Combined, these make SURI 2.0 an excellent all round choice and one that has won a place in my bathroom.

Our Choice

When to choose SURI 1.0

Price is the key reason to pick the S1 toothbrush over the S2. That being said, over the 3+ years that you'll own the brush, the £10 extra needed to pay for the 2.0 is more than justifiable, in my opinion.

Both brushes use the same heads, so there is no cost difference there.

The 1.0 is a very good brush that will serve the vast majority of users well, so if the difference in price appeals to you, there is a saving to be had. When comparing the price, just be mindful of whether or not the travel case is included with the versions you are looking at.

I’d definitely recommend spending the extra on the versions with a travel case.

And if you do opt for SURI v1, make sure you don't brush with too much force as it doesn’t have a pressure sensor.

How we scored them

As you can see in the table below, SURI 2.0 has a higher score in all but one of the categories that we use to review a brush.

The one category where the score has decreased is battery performance; SURI 2.0 lasted for 38 days in our testing compared to 42 days for the 1.0. Overall, this is a minor decrease and 38 days battery life still gives you a month's usage from a single charge, which is fantastic.

The decrease in battery life is to be expected given SURI v2 has a stronger motor.

The support & reputation score has increased for SURI 2.0 because it comes with a 2 year warranty provided that you register the brush with SURI. This wasn't the case with the 1.0.

Both clean very well

From my own hands-on testing, which involves using both brushes for several weeks on end and carrying out several plaque disclosing tests, I can’t say one cleans better than the other.

Our testing scores do come out slightly higher for the 2nd generation SURI than the first (100 vs 94), but that is in part due to the structure of our scoring and the fact that the 2.0’s motor is more intense.

Intensity doesn’t have any meaningful impact on the cleaning results that I can tell and is more of a personal preference than anything.

Under clinical conditions, there might be some differences, but the likelihood is small.

I’d happily use either brush daily with no concern for my tooth or gum health.

Video comparison

In the video below you can see my hands-on comparison of SURI 1.0 and 2.0

SURI 1.0 vs SURI 2.0 comparison video thumbnail

Detailed comparison: SURI 1.0 vs SURI 2.0

These two toothbrushes are similar in more ways than they are different.

For 2.0, the team behind SURI have made several small changes that improve the overall user experience. And it has worked.

They look almost identical

Both versions come in the same 5 colour options.

Hold them both in hand and it is almost impossible to tell them apart.

The easiest way to do so is by looking at the base, where you will see that the 2 gold pins that are used to charge the S1 are not present on the S2.

SURI has introduced a fully indicative charging setup, which is what the majority of electric brushes use.

Not only does it make the brush look smarter, but it also addresses charging issues some users have had with SURI 1.0, whereby grime builds up on the pins and prevents charging.

I wouldn’t have known unless I asked, but for v2 SURI has changed the process for coating the aluminium handle in order to prevent the paint bubbling or chipping away like it did on some v1 models.

Where there has been a more noticeable change is with the accessories. The colour of those provided with the 1.0 is bright white or a mottled grey colour. With SURI 2, all have moved to a duller, slightly off-white.

Jon holding SURI 1.0 and 2.0 side by side
The form factor of SURI 1.0 and SURI 2.0 is almost identical

The same 33,000 vibrations, but 25% more powerful

There’s a new motor in the 2.0 model, which is said to offer 25% more power.

Used side by side, I can tell there is a difference. But, as stated above, it hasn’t actually made any meaningful difference to the cleaning results.

I prefer the higher intensity; it feels like it is cleaning deeper, but it is a psychological feeling and personal preference.

If I had not been told it was 25% more powerful, I would have rated the increase slightly less, in the region of 15-20%.

2 cleaning modes are available on both brushes, but with the 2.0 the names have changed to gentle clean and deep clean rather than clean and polish.

Different coloured LEDs denote the 2 different modes.

Replacing brush heads has gotten easier

Even as an able-bodied person, I have found removing heads on the SURI 1.0 to be quite tough. They are certainly not coming off in a hurry. A firm grip and a good pull are needed.

Despite the two handles using the same heads, it is noticeably easier to fit and remove them with SURI 2.0.

It’s a subtle thing that makes the 1.0 far less appealing for those with strength and dexterity issues.

With the 2.0 the fitting procedure is much more closely aligned with the typical electric toothbrush.

You can get a rough idea of the difference in the video below:

The brush head on SURI 2.0 is easier to remove

A pressure sensor to protect your teeth & gums

A pressure sensor is one of three main features we recommend looking for in an electric toothbrush. It was always a disappointment to me that the original SURI didn’t include one.

The absence of one is not a deal breaker, provided you know not to brush too hard, but unfortunately, many don’t. Scrubbing hard and fast does not equal a better clean.

With the introduction of SURI 2.0 comes a pressure sensor.

When too much force is applied, the bristles stop moving, the handle alerts you with some beeps, and it becomes obvious that the pressure needs to be reduced for it to start working again.

Compared to other pressure sensors, the 2.0 does, in my opinion at least, require more force than most to be activated.

The 1.0 SURI will essentially stop the bristles from moving if too much pressure is applied, but you don’t get any warnings and there is still a bit of vibration making its way to the bristle tips.

The force required to make this happen is similar on the S1 compared to the S2, maybe marginally more force is needed with the original to make the bristles stop.

I am actually aware that some loathe pressure sensors, even if the intention is to protect the teeth and gums from being damaged.

The good news is that with the 2.0 it is possible to turn it off.

With more power comes shorter battery life

The increased power of the brush motor on SURI v2 has had a knock on effect on how long the battery lasts.

In my testing, I achieved 38 days on average using the deep clean mode, compared to the 42 with the original 1.0.

It’s only a few days difference, and not reason enough to pick one over the other.

SURI’s claims have changed from 40+ days for the 1.0, to 1+ month for the 2.0.

Both are far better than their Oral-B counterparts. And given how slim the handle is, the battery life is impressive.

The time it takes to charge the brush on the stand has increased. Where SURI 1 charged in 3-4 hours, it can take up to 7 hours with the 2.0.

This may have been impacted by the change to inductive charging with the 2nd generation compared to the gold pin approach with the original brush.

SURI 2.0 takes longer to charge now that it uses an inductive charging stand (right), but it's a worthwhile trade-off

SURI is an ideal travel companion

The compact charging travel case that comes supplied with the 1.0 is impressive, but SURI has stepped up even further with the 2.0.

A more rounded design to the hard plastic case not only looks better, but feels it too.

It is easier to clean inside thanks to the removal of the charging pins and the glossier finish to the plastic inside the case.

It's easier to clean inside the SURI 2.0 travel case

The travel case now has a small battery inside, which powers the UV-C light only. This means that the sanitisation cycle can run without a power cable attached to the case. This isn’t possible with version 1.

A USB Type-C port still features on the base of the hard plastic case, but the supplied cable has changed too.

Rather than a USB Type-A to Type-C cable supplied with the 1.0, it is a Type-C to Type-C cable with the 2.0.

Given that lots of smartphones (including the iPhone 15 onwards) use the same USB Type-C cable, it’s quite possible that you can use the same one to charge your phone and your toothbrush.

When inside the travel case the S1 comes in at 44 grams lighter than the S2, which is a small but meaningful difference.

For those looking for the lightest and most travel-friendly setup, the S2 goes one step further.

Supplied in the box is a brush head cover that clips over the bristles and onto the head to protect them from damage and debris. The brush and head cover combined take up a little more space than a large pen.

In addition, it is possible to lock the brush handle to help prevent accidental activation. You need not worry about a vibrating bag as you go through a security check at the airport.

These thoughtful new touches mean that SURI 2.0 scores a few points higher in the category of ‘additional items & features’.

SURI 1.0 vs SURI 2.0 travel case comparison
The already impressive case from SURI v1 (left) has been improved for v2

It’s now 4 decibels louder

I measured the noise level of SURI 2.0 at 58 decibels. This makes it slightly louder than v1, which I measured at 54 decibels. To be fair, some of this could be from the tolerance of the decibel meter. A reading of 58 still makes SURI 2.0 one of the quietest electric toothbrushes available.

And these readings were taken on the more intense deep clean/polish mode.

Use the other softer cleaning mode and the decibel readings drop a few points.

SURI 1.0 vs SURI 2.0 noise comparison with decibel meter

An extra year’s warranty if you register

The average warranty period for an electric toothbrush is 2 years.

Thus, when SURI first launched, I wasn’t overly happy about the 1 year warranty supplied. It just felt weak and arguably goes against the sustainable and environmentally considerate approach the company advertises.

Thankfully, there has been some movement with the introduction of the S2. It is now possible to get 2 years of support, provided you log onto their website and register for the additional year of cover.

It’s an unnecessary obstacle to put in place and irritates me, but the option is there, so it’s something to be pleased with.

Consequently, SURI 2.0 scores 13 points higher in our ‘support & reputation’ category.

Conclusion

The 2.0 is the brush to go for. It is one of the best brushes I have used.

With a number of iterative improvements on the first generation, the £10 premium is more than justifiable for the benefits it brings.

Your information is incorrect regarding the weights of the Suri v2 against v1. I own both versions and the v1 is 82g with a 103g travel case, totalling 185g. The v2 is 78g with a 151g charging case, totalling 228g. So the v2 is HEAVIER by a significant 43g when in its travelling case, and almost the same weight without case, whereas you said “The 2.0 is about 11g lighter than the 1.0. Or 36g lighter when in the travel case”. And then further down the article you repeated, “When inside the travel case the S2 comes in at 36 grams lighter than the S1, which is a small but meaningful difference”. Please correct the article since this is a highly misleading mistake for travellers. Otherwise very useful article, thanks!

No problem! Happens to the best of us. Btw in your corrected text, there is a typo: “When inside the travel case the S1 comes in at 44 grams lighter than the S1, which is a small but meaningful difference.” (Says version 1 twice)

I bought a 2.0 model & really liked it, but couldn't find a way to charge it with the USB-C cable. I contacted SURI but they weren't able to help me. So I'm returning my 2.0 & thinking of getting a 1.0, but I would have kept the 2.0 if I was able to charge it.

Hi Linda.

When you say you couldn't find a way to charge it. Is this because you don't have a USB-C power adapter? You possibly need a 3 pin, USB-C power adapter to allow you to connect the charging cable to a power outlet.
A lot of modern smartphones now come with such adapters or other modern tech products. Failing that you should be able to puchase an adapter for less than £10 in stores or online.

Thanks for your response Jon. When I bought the Siri I didn’t expect to have to buy another piece of equipment in order to charge it. I expected it to come with a U.K. connection. It didn’t have a USB end on the cable, so Hope could I charge it? It’s not good enough to expect people to purchase another adaptor.

Hi Linda.

I understand what you are saying and I don't necessarily disagree. However, what SURI are doing are working on the basis that many now have such adapters or if they don't they will have to acquire as USB Type C connectors are the future standard as per EU legislation.

They are also trying to avoid adding extra adapters uncessarily, given many will have such.

Here's a suitable power adapter you could invest in should you change your mind.
