Oral-B iO4 and iO5 Announced

Oral-B iO 4 & 5 Announced

Oral-B is expanding the iO Series of electric toothbrushes within the introduction of the iO4 and iO5, in the USA.

The iO4 and 5 are specifically designed to be more affordable options than the existing 6, 7, 8 and 9 models. Although the exact retail price is still to be confirmed, they are due to be priced at under $100.

Oral-B iO4 and iO5 Announced 1

The 4 and 5 retain the same handle styling and brush motor as the other iO models, but they will not have a display in the handle like the others.

Both brushes will have Bluetooth connectivity, but it is only that iO5 that will feature real-time coverage tracking.

The 2 brush handles are being launched in a number of different color choices:

  • Quite white
  • Matte black
  • Blush pink
  • Lavender
  • Icy blue
Oral-B iO5 color choices

You get multiple cleaning modes on each brush.

The iO4 comes with 4 modes:

  • Daily clean
  • Sensitive
  • Super sensitive
  • Whitening

The iO5 comes with 5 modes:

  • Daily clean
  • Intense
  • Sensitive
  • Super sensitive
  • Whitening

The iO5 will have cleaning mode icons built into the brush handle. These are placed between the power and mode button. Each icon will be backlit with a white light when the mode is selected.

The iO4 on the other hand has no icons on the handle to show which mode has been selected.

When you complete a 2 minute brushing session there will be what Oral-B calls β€˜rainbow celebration lights’ which will be emitted from the LED light ring that sits just below the brush head.

There’s also an LED on the brush handle that will be lit yellow to remind you to replace the brush head at the correct intervals (every 3 months). This LED is in the middle of the function/mode button.

The refill reminder is triggered after 90 days or an elapsed brushing time of 2 minutes/twice a day for 90 days (21,600 seconds).

Like the other iO models, it has a visible pressure sensor.

Brush with insufficient pressure and the light ring (beneath the brush head) will be lit white. Brush with the correct pressure and it will be lit green. Apply too much pressure and it will emit red light. It is a great feature. The iO Series to date has been the only toothbrush to tell you when the correct amount of pressure has been used.

Unlike the 7, 8, 9 and iO10, you won’t get a magnetic charger included.  Instead, it will be a regular Oral-B charging stand that will take about 12 hours to charge the battery, rather than the ~3 of the magnetic option.

It would also appear that the charging stand will be white in color, irrespective of the handle color. Don’t expect a black charging stand for the black handled brush.

iO4 from Oral-B

We don’t yet know what the box contents will be or precisely when they will be available to buy, but it should be within the next couple of months.

It has been confirmed that both the 4 and 5 series will come with a travel case, to hold and protect the handle itself and at least 1 brush head, but most likely 2.

I will update this article as soon as more information becomes available, and I will of course complete a full hands-on review, as soon as is possible.

Alongside the iO 4 and 5, Oral-B also announced the iO10 electric toothbrush with iO Sense Technology, a new flagship toothbrush within the iO range.
