Oral-B iO vs Genius X

Oral-B iO vs Genius X

Editor’s Note

The Oral-B iO has been announced, but not yet released for general sale.

It is expected to go on sale to the public in late summer 2020, approximately August.

This comparison has been written to highlight the differences, based on what information we already know.

It will be updated once I have hands-on time with the final production unit.

Which one would we choose?

Our choice: Oral-B iO
2nd choice: Oral-B Genius X

Both of these brushes are premium models that offer more than you need. But, if you want the best, then the iO is the one to go for.

The iO has been in development for 6 years and it shows.

It addresses some of the complaints I have had with the Genius X.

It is quieter, it looks more premium and charges much faster too.

That said, if you are in the market for a brush now, and you can’t afford to wait until late summer, then go for the Genius X.

Key Differences

  • The iO looks quite different to the Genius X, with a premium design.
  • The iO is available in 3 color options (white, black onyx & rose quartz) compared to 5 colors (white, black, rose gold, sakura pink & anthracite grey) of the Genius X.
  • The iO has a new style of CrossAction brush head, that is similar, but different to that with the Genius X.
  • The iO has a new frictionless motor which is quieter than the Genius X.
  • The iO offers an oscillating-rotating cleaning action with micro-vibrations as opposed to pulsations on the Genius X.
  • An OLED display is built into the handle of the iO to display key data. The display enables easy navigation through the brush features and personalization: welcoming greetings, choice of brushing modes, language settings and reminders to change the brush head. This is not included on the Genius X.
  • 7 cleaning modes are available on the iO compared to the 6 on the Genius.
  • The visible pressure sensor on the iO lights up green when the correct amount of pressure is applied and red when too much force is used. The Genius X only lights up red when too much pressure is applied.
  • The iO has a magnetic charging stand.
  • The iO can charge in just 3 hours compared to the 12 hours of the Genius X.
  • The Genius X has a battery charging icon/LED on the front of the brush handle. This information is displayed on the OLED display of the iO.
  • The Genius X has a travel case that allows the brush to be charged inside, the iO does not.

These differences are explained at length later in this article. However, you might wish to learn more about each brush being compared. To do so, check out our hands-on reviews:

Please note. Every effort is made to ensure the key differences listed are correct, but these differences are subject to change without notice. Products and the box contents can be changed without notice and different variants can exist.

Detailed comparison: what’s the difference between the Oral-B iO and Genius X?

Given that at the time of writing the iO is not actually available for sale and I have not had any extensive hands-on time, I am not in a position to write a detailed comparison between these 2 models.

The bullet point list should give you a good overview of the differences.

I will update this section of the comparison once I have the additional information and hands-on use to be able to give you the feedback you require.

Does one clean better than the other?

The answer to this question will only be known when I get to go hands-on with the iO later in 2020.

It is my expectation that the brushing experience and results will likely be very similar, with no distinguishable difference.

This is typical of a lot of toothbrushes today. They all may perform slightly differently, and may under clinical conditions show better cleaning compared to another, however, clinical conditions and real-world use is very different.

For most users, the more positive effect can be seen and felt from perfecting their brushing technique and routine than picking 1 toothbrush over another.

That said, the iO is using a different type of motor to the X, so there may well be some subtle differences.

Oral-B iO vs Genius X 3

The inclusion of OLED screen on the handle will provide information that has never before been so easily accessible.

What this means that there is a very strong argument that users like you and I will be able to achieve a better clean with the iO as we have more data and information at our fingertips.

I will of course report back, in detail when I have tested the iO and compared it to the Genius X.

Is one better priced than the other?

Yes, I expect the Genius X to be cheaper than the iO.

The official price of the iO has not been confirmed, but based on historic price information, I can say with some certainty that the iO will command a premium over the Genius X.

There is a standard and luxe version of the Genius X, the recommended retail price is $220 and $250

However, as is common with electric toothbrushes, the actual selling price is considerably less, about 20% less.

I was able to buy the Genius X for $175 and the Luxe for $200 at the time of launch. That is a significant saving!

Oral-B iO vs Genius X 4

Since then, the average selling price has fallen a little further, saving another $20.

When the iO does go on sale, I suspect a retail price similar to the Genius X, at around $250, maybe a fraction more at $275.

However, I suspect from day 1 of it going on sale you will be able to buy it for around $200-225.

As the iO goes on sale, the price of the Genius X, which will be around a year old at this point will drop further. I expect a price somewhere between $170.

This is precisely what happened when the Genius X replaced the Genius Pro 8000.

Only when the iO launches will we know for certain.

Please note that all prices quoted are approximates and will vary based on location, supplier and time of purchase.  These figures were correct at the time of writing and should not be relied upon as hard fact, but used as a guide during your decision process.

The Oral-B iO is the brush to go for.

Whilst I have yet to go hands-on and test all of the features and functions, it has the technical specs and improvements over the Genius X, that make it the brush to buy.

That said, if you are in the market for a brush now, and you can’t afford to wait until late summer, then go for the Genius X.

Your Opinions

Ultimately, whatever brush you decide upon, it is you who needs to make the decision; but do so based on which is best for your needs or that of the end user.

Only pay the price you are happy with and do not be led into buying something if it is not right.

Hopefully, I have presented the facts and made the whole decision process that little bit easier.
