The 3 BIG questions about the Oral-B Pro 6500

f you are short of time, the answers to the following 3 questions should let you know all you need to about the Pro 6500 (view on Amazon). It’s also worth noting that for this review we used the Pro 6500 Black, which is a special edition version of the brush that’s coloured black.

Except for the colour, the Pro 6500 black is the same as the normal Pro 6500.

If we have missed something, let us know in the comments. If you want more detail, you can read our full Oral-B Pro 6500 review further down the page or watch our video review.

1. Is there anything drastically wrong with this toothbrush?

Technically no, aesthetically yes.

As a toothbrush that cleans your teeth, you can’t do much better if at all. It has multiple cleaning modes, a good box contents, including a travel case and a wireless smart guide and a reasonable battery life of 10 days.

However for me the elephant in the room here is the design. The 6500 whilst offering an additional cleaning mode over the Pro 6000 was the Black and Silver colour combination. It is different and appealing, but the lacks attention to detail. The power and function buttons are not as prominent and the white brush head with a Black and Silver brush does not fit in my opinion.

When first reviewed the 6500 scored just 3 out of 5. That was a little harsh. However recent changes in the Oral-B range and the lack of availability of the Pro 6000 (one of our favourites) means a revised rating of 5/5 given the current price, product range and availability.

As a technical product the 6500 is fantastic. It is design that lets it down, but that is just personal opinion.

2. Which other brushes should I consider?

We strongly recommend checking out the Smart 6 6000, which is the updated version of the Pro 6500.

If you like the 6500, you can also take a look at the Pro 6000 which is very similar to the 6500.

3. Where is the best place to buy the Pro 6500?

When we last updated this post we didn’t find any retailers apart from Amazon stocking this brush as it is now slightly older. You may be better off considering the newer Oral-B Smart 6 6000, but if it is truly the 6500 you are interested in then it’s worth checking out eBay for deals as well.

Oral-B Pro 6500 Black Review

And now for a bit more detail…

The packaging, the box contents and the pictures online make this brush stand out. It looks like the kingpin but there are a few shortcomings that hamper the overall experience.

Variants of this toothbrush

The Pro 6500 is also known as and referred to the Smart Series 6500.

Originally launched as the Pro 6500 with one of the features being Bluetooth connectivity, as the range of brushes with Bluetooth increased, Oral-B decided to rename these to differentiate from those without.

The Pro series on the most part does not include this whereas those known or labelled as Smart Series do. Therefore whether referred to as the Pro 6500 (not to be confused with Pro 650) or the Smart Series 6500, it is the same brush.

What’s in the box?

  • Braun Oral-B Pro 6500 Black rechargeable toothbrush
  • Charging station
  • Toothbrush head storage compartment
  • 4 x Brush heads (Cross Action, Floss Action, 3D White and Sensitive)
  • Wireless Smart Guide
  • Travel case
  • Documentation

Key Features

  • Oral-B 3D movement cleaning system (pulsates, sweeps and rotates)
  • Removes 100% more plaque than a manual brush
  • Rechargeable battery with 40 minutes of usage time
  • 6 cleaning modes (Daily Clean, Gum Care, Sensitive, Whitening, Deep Clean and Tongue Cleaner)
  • Visible pressure sensor
  • Clean timer including quadpacer
  • Wireless smart guide
  • Brush head storage compartment
  • Unique colour scheme

Pro & Cons

Here are what I consider to be the pros and cons of the Oral-B Pro 6500.

The Positives

  • Uniqueness – It does not look clinical, finished in premium materials it stands out from the competition.
  • 6 cleaning modes – It has all the cleaning modes possible of a powerbrush. Nothing is left out. From sensitive to deep clean it is there for you. Making this ideal for use within a family, for those who are obsessive with oral hygiene or for someone who just wants the premium option.
  • Timed Clean – An audible warning when to change quadrant and when the 2 minute cycle is complete.
  • Battery Life – Offering up to 40 minutes of usage time it is better than the majority of Oral B Pro series models and with a dedicated battery icon it is relatively simple to tell how much power remains.
  • Pressure sensor – A rear mounted pressure sensor illuminates red should too much force and pressure be applied to the teeth. Acting as a visual indicator you are clearly made aware to reduce the pressure and chances of doing damage to the teeth. This same sensor flashes green in conjunction with the quadpacer.
  • Smart Wireless Guide – A portable clock and timer that shows your cleaning mode, how well you are brushing and how long you have been brushing for.
  • Box contents – With 4 brush heads in the box and a storage option for the brush heads, a Smart Wireless Guide and travel case the package contents is good.

The Negatives

  • Uniqueness – The same thing that makes it unique is also a weakness where small attention to detail has not been considered.
  • Battery Life – Up to 10 days life or 40 minutes of usage time is weak in comparison to a Philips Sonicare brush.

Design, usability, clean & general use

With an RRP of £250 and being a Black edition the whole experience should be faultless should it not?

Whilst you may think so, it is not sadly.

It is important to stress that technically from the perspective of cleaner teeth and mouth then it is superb and warrants a 5 star rating like the Pro 6000 but it is the unique design cues that make it so different that actually go against it.

Thankfully recent price drops mean we are no longer considering this brush at the premium price it once commanded and recent range changes means it is necessary to re-evaluate how this brush sits in comparison to the rest of the options available to us.

Oral_B_Pro_6500a

Compared to a manual toothbrush this can remove up to 100% more plaque and your teeth certainly feel cleaner after use. Lets get the negatives out the way first before looking at the brush in more detail.

Finished in black and silver it certainly has a less clinical look to it and the brush feels solid in hand.

The black rubber and matte silver sides look smart from a distance but the lack of colour on what are normally accented power and function keys means they are almost lost within the body of the brush.

Oral_B_Pro_6500b

The silver and black also shows water marks and dirt a little more than other models and the rubber has a different texture to other Black editions like the Pro 650 and 2500.  It looks classier but overall is not as good in my opinion.

The power and cleaning mode buttons have blue illuminations that show through once the brush has been powered on. Once on they look good.

Oral_B_Pro_6500j

What is a nice touch is the line of blue light that goes from the bottom to the top of the brush although this line of blue light varies in intensity where the design and positioning of the LEDs has been poorly completed.  Judge for yourself in the hand on images.

The interchangeable brush heads are white in colour and stick out like a sore thumb against the black.  A black coloured brush head (not the bristles) would finish it off a lot better.

Oral_B_Pro_6500h

Philips have clearly got this bit sorted as you get colour coded brush heads and can buy them separately, the white just looks silly.

Then we come to the Smart Wireless Guide. Normally white in colour with the Pro 6500 it is silver around the front and sides but the back panel is white. Really? That is like buying a blue car and getting a single white body panel.  It looks silly.

Oral_B_Pro_6500c

You will not notice it much when on a shelf or tucked in the corner of a bathroom or indeed adhered to the wall but it is the principle. So that is the criticism over for the most part. Hopefully, this is understandable.

Lets now take a look at the daily usage.

It is a little larger than the entry and mid range Oral B brushes being about a 1cm thicker in hand and about 35g heavier at 168g with the head attached.  The benefit is more cleaning modes and better battery life.

The Smart Series which includes the Pro 6500 has a power button to activate the brush and then a cleaning mode button that can be pressed to cycle through the cleaning modes. Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn the brush off.

These cleaning modes are:

  1. Daily Clean
  2. Gum Car
  3. Sensitive
  4. Whitening
  5. Deep Clean
  6. Tongue Cleaner

You can choose any cleaning mode you like based on your preference.  It is advisable to use the toothbrush head best suited for each clean and your personal oral hygiene needs.

There is no denying my teeth always feel cleaner with an electric toothbrush clean than that of a manual brush.

The brush heads provided with the Pro 6500 use an oscillating rotating and pulsating motion as shown in the following animated image:

Oral-B Pro 6500 Review 1

In the box comes a Cross Action, Floss Action, 3D White and Sensitive brush head but you can also purchase a Precision Clean and TriZone options to use with the brush handle.

Remember that you should always change the brush head every 3 months or sooner for the optimum performance and to avoid damage to your teeth and health.

Oral-B’s very own brush heads use a dye on the bristles that fades in time.  This acts as an indicator to you that you need to change your brush head, or indeed a reminder can be set in the Oral B app.

Oral_B_Pro_6500

What we believe to be an underrated feature of the Smart Series is the Smart Wireless Guide that is included.

Powered by 2 AA batteries that typically last 3 months, this guide can be adhered to a wall with the provided adhesive pad or it can happily sit on a shelf or work surface.

Wirelessly communicating with the brush, it not only acts as a clock but shows you what brushing mode you have selected on the Pro 6500 and how long you have been brushing your teeth for.

We can all get distracted when cleaning and think, how long have I….and this smart wireless guide assists with that.

If too much pressure is applied and the pressure sensor is activated a sad face will appear on the display and at the end of the clean you get a star rating out of 4.

Oral_B_Pro_6500n

Ditching the gloss white plastic the front and rear of the Pro 6500 Black is finished in a soft rubber grip which is black in colour and the sides are in a matte silver.

The addition of a rubber grip on the back is quite a bit more comfortable and premium looking than the normal hard white plastic. But gone are selected contours around the power button which are quite nice on the more entry level brushes.  The power button is just as tactile but is a little more recessed.

On the rear neck of the brush just before getting to the interchangeable heads is a smoked grey panel which sweeps down into the boy of the brush to join up with the two blue LED light strips that run the length of the body.

Oral_B_Pro_6500f

This is the panel that illuminates red if ever too much pressure is applied during brushing.

Whilst it illuminates a red which is quite visible to you as the user you will hear the sound of the motor change and if using the smart wireless guide you will see a sad face.

If also using the Oral B app, the timer will change to a red colour and tell you too much pressure is being used. As soon as the pressure is reduced, the light will go out.

For safety’s sake the brush will reduce the power to the brush head when the sensor is active. The bristles of the brush should virtually skim the surfaces of the teeth and do not require a lot of force.

A standard brushing cycle is for 2 minutes, but cleaning modes such as whitening and deep clean will go on for longer.

Oral_B_Pro_6500e

During the normal 2 minute cleaning cycle (Daily Clean) the brush will provide an audible warning via a slight pause in the brushing at 30 second intervals to tell you to change quadrant. This is your built-in timer. As an added bonus on the 6500 the pressure sensor will illuminate green.

The brush continues to operate at the end of the cycle, unless you turn it off. The pause at the end of the 2 minutes is a little longer to signify to you it is the end of the clean.

Brushing for the full 2 minutes is very important, but just as important if not more so is the right technique. Make sure you learn how to clean your teeth properly.

You should also note that it is vital to clean your teeth at least twice a day.  Always try to leave 45-60 minutes after eating before you decide to brush.

Any electric toothbrush irrespective of brand will be more effective at removing plaque and this is why Oral-B state that up to 100% more plaque can be removed in comparison to a manual toothbrush.  This is in part due to the power and consistency offered from a powerbrush along with the brush head design and then equally as important is the brushing technique.

If you struggle to keep yourself cleaning for 2 minutes or forget, there are a couple of tools to help you.

There is, of course, the smart wireless guide but more unique to the Smart Series if the Oral-B app.

Now this app can be used with any Oral B Pro brush using the using the Sound Connectivity feature, which is not well marketed.

Oral_B_Appc

Once you have downloaded the Oral-B app onto your iOS or Android device, go into the app settings and make sure in the that ‘Toothbrush Sound Recognition’ is switched on.

Providing you then have the app open on your smartphone or tablet when you go to clean your teeth, the built-in microphones will listen out for the sound of the brush.

As it does, it begins a timer on-screen and logs your clean in the app. The idea is great but there are a few issues in my mind.

  1. Not all that many of us may have a phone or tablet to hand as we are cleaning our teeth
  2. The app does not automatically load or begin timing unless you have opened it up
  3. The app is engineered primarily for the more premium Smart Series brushes (Pro 6000 & 6500)

This is where things get promising for the 6500.  It has Bluetooth connectivity which is more powerful and reliable and can transfer more data and makes the app much more useful.

Oral_B_App

Whilst you need to launch the app each time to use it the brush itself can store the data for up to 20 cleans meaning you do not need to always have the app to hand.

The connection and transfer is more reliable, although I have found on occasions the app will think I have stopped brushing when I have not.  It is not perfect, but far better than most would think.

Once connected the ability to store and share more data allows you to essentially build a cleaning history and diary of performance and the app can work as a coach.  You can have the brush programmed to offer selected cleaning modes and have the app prompt you for flossing and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash and more.

The app is very powerful and also comes with handy integration with your calendar, news, tips and tricks so you stay interested when cleaning your teeth.  Although on occasions it can be a bit distracting from you ensuring you brush correctly and you may want to customise the settings to avoid some notifications.

Oral_B_Appa

Included in the box with the Pro 6500 is a charging stand, but also a moulded piece of plastic complete with a lid which offers a home to additional brush heads.  This protects them from dirt and dust and vies a safe place to keep them.  Ideal if you use different brush heads or have brush heads for different users.

Throughout use the battery status icon and buttons are illuminated and these along with Bluetooth cannot be turned off to conserve power.

Wireless icons along with a 3 stage battery icon are shown in a panel in the lower third of the brush handle.

When the brush requires a charge the battery icon will flash red, but you may want to top it up before it gets this low.

As a moulded brush with a virtually all in one design, maintenance is not simple on this brush other than a rinse and a wipe.  However, it should not really be required. Should something go wrong, there is as standard a 24 month warranty is provided with the Pro 6500.  This covers the battery too.  Register the brush online and you get an extra 12 months at no extra cost, so 36 months or 3 years in total.

Summary of design, usability, clean & general use

  • Black design does not continue to brush heads
  • Blue illumination is not consistent
  • Dedicated power button and cleaning mode button
  • 6 cleaning modes – daily clean, gum care, sensitive, whitening, deep clean and tongue cleaner
  • Teeth feel cleaner

  • Water resistant and can be used in the shower
  • 3 year warranty if you register online for a free additional year over the 2 included as standard

Battery life

The 6500 offers a reasonable battery life of 10 days.  This is just shy of the new Genius range at 12 days and is better than most of the Pro series at 7 days.

It is still not as good as the 3 weeks possible from selected Philips brushes.

You should expect good battery life and the Smart Series just about does enough to stop a scathing review of battery performance, in part by the fact that a toothbrush is generally left in one place and can be comfortably left on the charger without issue.

In the box with the 6500 is a charging dock like any other Oral B powerbrush, although you do get 4 rubber feet on the bottom.

An all white small dock has a charging prong that sits proud of the surface and marries up with the recess in the bottom of the Pro 6500.

The brush essentially employs wireless charging.  There are charging coils in the charger and the brush itself that conducts the charge through the plastic body.

With one user, brushing twice a day for the recommended 2 minutes the 6500 will give 10 days of usage or 20 cleans which equates to 40 minutes of usage time.

Oral_B_Pro_6500g

Thankfully the battery status icons are a little more helpful and the three bars that illuminate blue give more indication as to just how much power is in the brush.

When power is really low a red charge indicator light begins flashing.  If it gets this low you will normally hear and feel the speed of the brush decreasing and it will eventually power off if all charge is used.

At any point the battery icons are illuminated during and post use of the brush, but do go out after about 15 seconds.

When docked and charging it can take 40 minutes of charging time to gain enough power for a 2 minute clean.  If you want to charge the brush fully it can take up to 24 hours!

However, it is safe to leave the brush on the charger all day long without overcharging the battery, it is impossible.

The manual does advise that every 6 months the brush should be discharged fully to maintain performance.

The charger connects to a 2 pin shaver socket found in most bathrooms around the world and supports 110-240v electricity supply.

Oral_B_Pro_6500k

As is sometimes the case a 2 pin shaver socket is not available you can purchase 2 pin to 3 pin adapters so that the brush can be charged from a normal mains socket found here in the UK.

It is a shame that Oral-B have yet to employ an automatic switch off at the end of a cleaning cycle like Philips offer. I am sure for some this would allow the battery power to be maximised a little more.

Summary of battery life

  • 40 minutes of usage time or 10 days usage based on 2 cleans a day
  • Can be left on the charger
  • Takes up to 24 hours to charge fully
  • A charger included in the box
  • Battery status icon gives an indication of battery power
  • Works on 110 or 240 volts
  • Battery life could still be better

Price & where to buy

I have included links to buying options here at the start of the review.

In the section below, I discuss the price more generally and in relation to similar products.

The Pro 6500  has a recommended retail price of £249.99.

When first reviewed the 6500 was sold exclusively through Boots. Half price offers came along from time to time but the price really was not all that justifiable.

Thanks to changes in the range and a change in exclusivity, since then the 6500 has a new lease of life and is now one of the best value options given its feature set.

Its is now available for well under £100.

Tracking recent price activity shows us that there have been some fabulous deals. Wait for a deal to crop up and it could be as low as £65.

This brush like every other requires replacement brush heads for each user every 3 months.  Replacement heads can be purchased in packs of 4 and are priced on average between £11 and £14

Using the average cost (based on one user) and ownership over 3 years (the same as the warranty period), the Pro 6500 Black Smart Series will cost £128 or 12p per day to own.

Buy it at that super special price of £65…we must stress this does not come up all that often and the it works out at £99 and 9p per day

Oral_B_Pro_6500i

This price does exclude the cost of water, toothpaste and electric to charge it, but you get a rough idea and is one of if not the cheapest decent electric toothbrushes available at the moment.

If you share the brush handle (not the heads) with other family members then the cost comes down overall but you could do the yourself and the whole family a favour and opt for the more clinical looking Pro 6000 that works out at 4p per day cheaper.

Please note that all prices quoted are approximates and will vary based on location, supplier and time of purchase.  These figures were correct at the time of writing and should not be relied upon as hard fact, but used as a guide during your decision process.

Summary of price & where to buy

  • Recommended retail price of £249.99
  • Typically available for £95 or as low as £65 on the right day
  • Works out at 12p per day over 3 years if purchased at £95 or just 9p f you manage to get it on a deal price.
  • Share brush handle with another user to extend value

Reliability & long term use

No brush comes through our review process without being fully tested and the Pro 6500 Black edition is no exception.

Naturally, we can only test for several weeks and this is not really long enough to say how well it will stand the test of time, but all Oral-B brushes go through a strict quality control programme.

In the time we had with it there was nothing to suggest that it should suffer any worse than any other brush, nor anything to say it would fare better.

The Black can attract dust and particles a little more than some others as the rubber has a slightly different texture to the cheaper brushes. A rinse usually solves this.

If the Pro 6500 lasts as well as the Pro 2000 that has been on test with us for 18 months an older Triumph 6500 is now over 4 years old then you will have gotten pretty decent value for money and reliability.

We see no reason why this should not last as long.

When buying Oral-B you are getting a good quality brush.  The fact that you can get up to 3 years warranty is testament to Braun’s commitment to a reliable product.

The weakest point is the battery.  After repeated charges and discharges it can fail and should it, they are not easy to replace. To prolong the life of any brush do try to discharge the battery fully every couple of months and give it a rinse and a wipe down to remove grime that builds up.

Oral_B_Pro_6500l

Conclusion

The Pro 6500 may have technically been superseded by newer models, but technically, it remains an excellent brush.

Sadly it was the design and price that let it down a little, but a price drop allows me to be a little more forgiving of the shortcomings of this brush.

I still think a white brush head on a black and silver bodied brush is not all that smart, and newer models look nicer.

Take this into account and I assure you, from a clean, performance and box contents perspective you will not be disappointed.

  1. Dear Jon

I have an oral b 6500 toothbrush i got it less than a year ago and suddenly out of no where it stopped working and unfortunately I’m outside the UK so i think its the battery’s problem, so i wanted to buy a battery from ebay or amazon, can you please tell the the size, the number and the specs of the battery to get.

    Thanks so much in advance

    • Hi Mina,

Whilst it is technically possible for you to buy and replace the battery within the brush, I do not advise on the correct one to buy or how to install.

My recommendation is always to get the manufacturer to replace it, preferably under warranty.

Even-though you are not in the UK, Oral-B do have regional support networks. If you head to their website, chose the country you are in and follow the support pages you should be able to get them to take a look at it.

    • It is a bit confusing Anthony. Oral-B are soft of different. They focus on a cleaning via an oscillating-pulsating and rotating approach. If you were to classify this it would be sonic rather than ultrasonic.

    • Hi Chrissie,

It seems odd that it is not fully charged after 2 days. Have you taken off the charger and run it at all? Perhaps see how long it lasts, Depelete the battery and try re-charging to see if that fixes it.

  2. FYI the Oral B 6500 is now cheaper than the Oral B 6000 on amazon. On comparisons today on Amazon (black Friday weekend) 6000 is £88.98 and the 6500 black is £69.98

The Genius 9000 is £99.99 at the moment. We opted for the cheapest 6500 after reading all your reviews. Partly because it was the cheapest but also we felt the Genius needing to pair with phone was a bit gimmicky and not suitable for everyday use when getting ready for work etc.

    • Hi Kylie.

The prices are always changing, but that is indeed a good deal.

Glad the reviews helped! Let us know hat you think once you have got and tried it.

    • Hi Matthew. The Pro 7000 is a model primarily found within the USA and is equivalent to the the Pro 6500. We have not had hands on with it to compare.
