Our Verdict

The colour of the handle is engaging and there is the essential timer and pacer built-in.
It performs well and there is not much to fault.
However, there are more engaging options for a young child.
Pros
- Slim handle
- 1 cleaning mode
- Built-in timer
Cons
- Aside from bold colours nothing else to appeal to children
- Just 7 days battery life
- Better options exist (see other choices)

The 3 BIG questions about the Oral-B Stages Junior
If you are short of time, the answers to the following 3 questions should let you know all you need to about the Oral-B Junior electric toothbrush. If we have missed something, let us know in the comments.
If you want more detail, you can read or watch our full Oral-B Junior review further down the page.
1. Is there anything drastically wrong with this toothbrush?
Far from it. It is an appealing electric toothbrush that can offer a decent clean to the teeth.
But, it feels like it is lacking. More needs to be done to engage and encourage children to brush for longer and better.
2. Which other brushes should I consider?
For children aged 3-8 years, go for the Philips Sonicare for Kids Connected HX6322/04. It is more expensive, but it is a worthwhile investment.
For the older and more mature child who needs less supervision, then the more grown up Oral-B Pro 3 3500 is a much better purchasing decision.
For a more detailed comparison of choices, see our best electric toothbrush for kids article.

3. Where is the best place to buy the Oral-B Junior?
There is no one best place to purchase this brush from, but popular stores, be those online or on the high street that stock this brush are Boots, Superdrug and Amazon.
Below we have included the Amazon links to the Oral-B Junior and the two brushes we recommend considering alongside it.

And now for a bit more detail….
The Oral-B Junior is a halfway house between a kids and adults toothbrush.
Designed specifically for slightly older children, 6 years old and above, the brush brings a more sophisticated approach and a larger soft brush head to suit the more developed teeth and mouth this age group have.
Variants of this toothbrush
There are 2 versions of this brush, the only difference is the colour of the brush handle, every other feature is the same.
The Oral-B Junior brush handle comes in either the Purple colour that I have been testing and writing about in this review as well as a rather vivid Green colour.
The availability of the colours depends on the retailer, but I have found the Purple to be the better stocked of the two.
I should make you aware, however, of 2 other brushes that also carry the Oral-B Junior name.
They look and are technically different to the Oral-B Junior shown and spoken about in this review.
The 2 models are:
- Oral-B Junior Smart
- Oral-B Junior Star Wars
The Junior Smart has Bluetooth technology, and is able to connect to a smartphone via an app. It offers better battery life and has more features, including a pressure sensor.
Stylistically, the Star Wars version looks very similar to the Junior Smart, but the handle features a Stormtrooper from Star Wars, the brush has 1 less cleaning mode and no Bluetooth connectivity.
If you would like to know more, you should check out my Oral-B Junior Smart review.

Pro & Cons
Here are what I consider to be the pros and cons of the Oral-B Junior toothbrush.
The Positives
- Design – A lovely slim handle available in 2 appealing colours
- Timer – Built-in timer with pacer to encourage brushing for the right amount of time.
- Battery status – An LED that gives some clue to the battery charge levels.
The Negatives
- Engagement – More could be done to engage and encourage children to brush for the right amount of time.
- Battery life – It would be preferable if the battery lasted longer than 7 days, like other brushes on offer from Oral-B.
Design, usability, clean & general use
From the moment you clap eyes on the packaging you can tell that the target age group is older children.
A smart and sophisticated design to the packaging is accented by lovely bright colours that catch the eye and highlight the key features of the brush.

Available in either Purple or Green, it is the Purple that appears to be more readily available, but both are bright and engaging and a little more fun than the more neutral White and light shades that adorn a lot of adult electric toothbrushes.
I list above what you get in the box when you open it up, but what it is like to use?
The handle is slim, marginally slimmer than most brushes designed for adults.
Made from plastic the handle is smooth to the touch. Purple or Green in colour the sides of the handle having White rubber grips that run top to bottom and make the handle much easier to hold onto, particularly with wet hands.

On the front of the handle of the Oral-B Junior 6+ is an ovalish White rubber panel which has a circular, raised power button within it. This is the button that turns the brush on and off.
In the lower third of the handle is the battery icon and LED that gives some feedback on the battery status.

Below this is the Oral-B and Braun logo in White, contrasting with the Purple body colour.
On the left side of the handle are the words ‘Professional Care’ and ‘Timer’. The White text shows it is part of Oral-B’s professional range of toothbrushes and has a built-in timer, more on this shortly.
The grip that runs down either side has a series of ridges that are closest together towards the top, helping keep little hands and fingers in place.
On the back of the brush is very little aside from some regulatory logo’s and the letters Ni-MH, which is short for Nickel Metal Hydride and is the type of battery that is built into the handle.

Sealed inside the handle is the battery and the brush motor.
It offers up to 7 days battery life when fully charged, claim Oral-B.
To charge it, you sit the brush on the provided charging stand. This stand has a prong on the top of it which fits into a recess on the base of the brush.
The handle itself is not perfectly round, there is a slightly squared shape to it and the bottom has more of a tapered design to give it a thicker base.
At the neck of the brush handle is where on the rear, a small White rubber notch extends from the handle. Lay the brush flat and this stops the brush from rolling about.
Protruding from inside the handle is the metal shaft that is driven by the internal brush motor.
It is to this that the interchangeable brush head fits.
Supplied in the box is a single Sensitive brush head.

Despite being designed for children, the Oral-B Junior toothbrush heads are not specific to this toothbrush. The head provided is actually an adult sized brush head.
Oral-B offer a range of different brush head styles, which is explained in detail in our Ultimate Oral-B brush head guide.
What has been done with the Oral-B junior electric toothbrush purple and green is that the head provided is the softest bristled head, the sensitive style brush head.
As the mouth and teeth are developing, a soft bristled brush is the best type to use. Ideally, I suggest you stick with this until your child becomes a teenager, where other heads could be considered.
Despite having the name Oral-B Junior 6+, as the size of the brush head is not specific to children, technically, adults could use it, if you chose.
The head itself should be used for on average 3 month’s.
There are some Blue indicator bristles on the head that over time will fade to a very pale/translucent colour. When this happens, it is time to change the brush head.
Press the power button and the brush launches into the one and only cleaning mode available on the brush.

Lasting for 2 minutes, this meets the expectations and recommendations of dental professionals.
Built into the handle is a timer and pacer.
As you might well be aware, when brushing or 2 minutes, roughly speaking you should spend 30 seconds cleaning each of the quadrants of the mouth.
The quadrants are upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left. Spend 30 seconds cleaning each with the right technique and after 120 seconds, the clean will be complete and you will have brush all the teeth relatively evenly.
The Oral-B Juniors timer kicks in the moment the brush is switched on. At 30 seconds a slight pause in the brush motor acts as an audible clue that it is time to switch. This continues at 30 second intervals until at the 2 minute time, where there are 3 pauses in the motor to signal the end of the clean. You need to press the button to turn the brush off.
With a pacer it is much easier for children to brush properly and know when the desired time is up.

Now, every child is different and what encourages them to brush for the right time will be different.
Your little Jimmy might be an absolute angel and has learned to brush his teeth for the right amount of time and need no additional encouragement.
Little Alice, on the other hand, might be a little monkey and do anything to avoid brushing those teeth.
I would really like to see some more interactivity and benefits to this brush, to ensure it more effective for more kids. This is something that has been done well with the Kolibree range of brushes.
The cheaper Oral-B Stages Power has an accompanying smartphone app that has a timer and rewards structure that motivates children to brush for the right amount of time.
No such offering here.

Now your child might be older and understand more, the Stages Power is aimed at 3 years plus. But from my testing, there are many 6 year old children (and older) that will still avoid brushing if they can.
Included in the box is a glossy and colourful card that can be left out with the toothbrush that explains the stages of brushing and may capture some children’s attention.
However, I still think more could be done here and feel some parents will still have struggles with brushing.
For the slightly more mature or developed child, then it could be worth considering opting for one of the electric toothbrushes that are designed for adults.
Why?
Well, you can still get and use a soft bristled brush head, but you may get additional benefits like a built-in pressure sensor or a better battery life, without the need to spend all that much more.
Take the Oral-B Pro 3 3500 for example.
It is similar to the Junior, but it has double the battery life and a pressure sensor would light up to alert a child when they are brushing their teeth with too much force; something that is a common problem.
Not all will agree, but I find this particularly worth considering as it is better to teach a child from a young age the right approach and the card in with the Junior handle does specifically mention not to brush too hard.

The Junior handle does have a pressure sensor in it. It will stop the pulsation movements until the pressure is relieved. You can hear a change in the sound of the motor, but there is no visual clue like there is with the 3500, which I think will work better with kids.
No matter how good your child is at brushing their teeth, you can be safe in the knowledge that they are, this brush is going to be cleaning more effectively than a manual brush, sweeping away, plaque and bacteria and helping keep their teeth and mouth healthy.
Waterproof this brush handle is, which means its can be rinsed under water, used in the shower, but immersed in water it should not be.
Build quality is good, it feels robust and I know from previous experience that the brush handles last. It comes as standard with a 2 year warranty, but register the brush online and there is the option of extending that warranty to 3 years, for no extra cost.

The Junior is a logical evolution from the Stages Power brushes designed for the youngest of children and is certainly a mid-ground between those and the adult toothbrushes. Whether it offers enough to engage your child is for you to decide.
If you are unsure, you could take advantage of Oral-B’s 30 day money back guarantee/test drive programme. The Junior is one brush handle that is eligible.
Summary of design, usability, clean & general use
- Vibrant Green or Purple brush handle
- Rubber grips either side of the brush handle
- Slim in hand
- Single cleaning mode
- Built-in timer and pacer
- Adult sized, sensitive brush head provided
- Other Oral-B brush heads fit the handle
- The brush will not engage all children, more interactivity desired
- Provided tutorial card is useful
- Pressure sensor works, but would be better if a visual sensor
- Waterproof handle
- 2 year warranty, which can be extended to 3 years
Battery life
I personally desire a brush with a pretty reasonable battery life, ideally, a couple of weeks, but not all brushes offer this, the Oral-B Junior included.
It does depend on your circumstances, but I like the thought of being able to go away for a week or two and not have to take the charger with me.
When it comes to children, it is a case of making sure they put the brush back on charge.

The Junior brush handles offers 7 days of usage, claim Oral-B.
Based on 2 cleans a day of 2 minutes in length you get 14 cleaning sessions or 28 minutes of running timer.
This is better than the Oral-B Stage Power that offers just 5 days, officially.
However, my own hands on testing managed to get 54 minutes of usage time, which is 27 leaning sessions or just over 13 days usage between charges.
I found that the Stages Power also surpassed the claimed battery life.
Perhaps not all will perform so well, but it seems fair to say most will surpass the minimum claim made by Oral-B, so a small benefit to be had.
Another bonus is that the Junior handle here does too have a battery status LED.
When on charge it flashes Green to show it is charging, but when low on power it flashes Red. A clear indicator it could do with being recharged.
Of course, you need not have the brush on charge all the time, but you are likely going to want to teach your child to do this and it is safe to do so.
The charging stand is the same charging unit provided with any Oral-B electric toothbrush, it will work with all Oral-B brushes, so if you have your own brush as a parent, you can share the same charging stand, rather than have multiples lined up in your bathroom.
Working on 220-240V the charger has a 2 pin power adapter suitable for UK bathrooms. If you do not have a power socket in the bathroom, then you will need a 2 pin to 3 pin adapter. Find out more information about these here.

The brush can take up to 22 hours to charge fully, which is quite a long time, considering only 28 minutes of running time. The charger offers a trickle charge to the battery.
Inside the handle the battery is a Nickel Metal Hydride battery and not the now more common Lithium-Ion battery.
Not a big issue, those with Lithium batteries tend to offer more usage time.
The aforementioned Pro 3 3500 for example lasts about 16 days.
Summary of battery life
- 28 minutes of usage time or 7 days usage based on 2 cleans a day – Hands on testing suggest as much as 54 minutes usage time
- Green light flashes when charging
- Red light flashes when low
- Can be left on the charger
- Takes about 22 hours to charge fully
- A charger included in the box
- Works on 220- 240 volts
- Nickel Metal Hydride battery rather than Lithium-Ion
Price & where to buy
I have included links to buying options here at the start of the review.
In the section below, I discuss the price more generally and in relation to similar products.
Of course, it depends on where and when you buy it as to exactly how much the Oral-B Junior electric toothbrush will cost.
The Recommended Retail Price (RRP) is actually £49.99, but the reality is you can buy it for approximately half that at £25.
3-5 years is the expected life from an electric toothbrush. Many will last longer, but to get some sort of idea of the cost of ownership, here at Electric Teeth we price the brush over 3 years.
The average cost of the brush is £25.

Over a 3 year period you will need a further 11 brush heads in addition to the one supplied.
Remember the Oral-B Junior electric toothbrush heads are not specific to children or the brush handle. They are the same heads you would buy as an adult.
Brush heads are sold in different pack sizes, from 2 up to 8, but most typical is packs of 4.
On average the heads works out at £3.13 each.
This gives an ownership cost of £59.38 or about 5 pence per day.
At this price is it not bad value, this is what I paid for this model on test here. I believe it to be reasonable and fair given what is on offer.
However, as I mentioned earlier in this review, it might be worth considering the Philips Sonicare for Kids Connected HX6322/04 or even the Oral-B Pro 3 3500 as alternatives, subject to your child’s age and motivation towards brushing.
The Stages Power is about £5 less but is a bit more engaging and interactive, but is geared more towards the younger child.
The Pro 3 3500 is normally about £10 more expensive, but will offer the visible pressure sensor and double the battery life, as this is a brush primarily designed for adults.
Please note that all prices quoted are approximates and will vary based on location, supplier and time of purchase. These figures were correct at the time of writing and should not be relied upon as hard fact, but used as a guide during your decision process.
Summary of price & where to buy
- Recommended retail price of £49.99
- Generally available from £25
- Brush heads approximately £3 each
- Works out at around 5p per day over 3 years
- Good value all things considered
Reliability & long term use
Years of manufacturing electric toothbrushes has meant that the models on offer today really are pretty reliable, solid and well built.
The nature of a product like this is that they can go wrong, although every effort is made to limit the chances of this.
Having taken a good look at the oral b junior electric toothbrush 6+ for signs of weakness or areas of concern I have none that lead me to question the reliability of this brush.

Specialist testing equipment I do not have, but and I for detail I do.
Should something stop working then Oral-B offer a 2 year warranty as standard.
Take 5 minutes and go online to register the brush and this can be extended to 3 years.
For a brush of this price, that’s great value in my mind.
Conclusion
The bold coloured handle of the Oral-B Junior (view on Amazon) is eye-catching and more engaging for the younger audience that this brush is intended for. There will be kids who love the Purple or Lime Green.
The provided tutorial card is a nice touch and a handy addition to act as a visual reminder to the younger generation on how to brush correctly.
The built-in timer is a great feature to encourage the correct cleaning time.
Whilst it performs well and there isn’t really much I can criticise, I can’t help but think this brush could be more engaging for a young child. Perhaps a smartphone app the logs the cleaning history and makes each session more interactive. Really it is all about the colour here.
For most children aged 3-8, I would be inclined to either purchase the more engaging Philips Sonicare for Kids Connected HX6322/04 or for the more mature, invest in a brush designed for adults, such as the Pro 3 3500.
You can spend less and in many respects get more with the Stages Power, or you can spend just a few pounds more and get extra benefits that will help as the child develops, my money personally is on investing in an electric toothbrush that has adults in mind.
