Tom’s of Maine Recycling Progam

Many of us know that we all need to be doing more to improve the levels of recycling and how we dispose of our waste.

This applies to everything in our day to day lives, including the products we use to clean our teeth.

Dentistry is a heavy user of plastics and there are many products we use that have a short usable life or are intended as single use.

Things are changing for the better, slowly and we embrace this change.

Natural care brand Tom’s of Maine have implemented a nationwide recycling program.

This program allows you to recycle a variety of used dental care and bathroom products and packaging.

How it works

Rather than throwing your toothbrush or toothpaste tube in the trash, you can throw it into a Toms of Maine recycling program box instead and then it can be recycled.

You can deposit your used products and packaging in one of the boxes available within the nationwide network of drop-off locations or alternatively, you can collect and send the items yourself.

This initiative is manged by Terracycle, but is funded by Tom’s of Maine.

Once full, the bin is collected and sent into TerraCycle’s facilities for processing.

The recyclable products are then separated by material composition, shredded and melted into hard plastic pellets.

From there they can be remoulded to make new recycled plastic products such as benches, bins, bags and more.

Do be aware that you can’t put all of your oral care and bathroom products in the recycling bin.

What you can place in the recycling box:

  • Mouthwash bottles and caps
  • Toothbrushes
  • Deodorant containers and caps
  • Soap packaging
  • Floss containers
  • Toothpaste tubes and caps

These products can be from any brand. They do not have to be Tom’s of Maine own products.

Whilst this list is not exhaustive, examples of the items you cannot put in the recycling box are:

  • Battery operated toothbrushes
  • Electric toothbrush handles
  • Dental floss
  • Batteries

If you can, do your bit for the environment.

Participating is simple and free.

If there are no public drop-off points near you, join the program and download a free shipping label to send your collections to TerraCycle.

The process is really simple.

TerraCycle rewards shipments of over 4 pounds with points. 2 points per package will be awarded.

These TerraCycle points can be redeemed for a variety of charitable gifts or a payment of $0.01 per point to the non-profit organization or school of your choice.

  1. Hello! Could you please let me know if you accept toothbrush heads from electric toothbrush (NOT) the body for recycling?

    • Hi Megan.

We have written about Toms of Maine’s program and don’t run it ourselves. They don’t say they are excluded, but they don’t say explicitly that they are accepted.

You might find that the Oral-B recycling program is better suited as they accept them.
