Many of us know that we all need to be doing more to improve the levels of recycling and how we dispose of our waste.
This applies to everything in our day to day lives, including the products we use to clean our teeth.
Dentistry is a heavy user of plastics and there are many products we use that have a short usable life or are intended as single use.
Things are changing for the better, slowly and we embrace this change.
Natural care brand Tom’s of Maine have implemented a nationwide recycling program.
This program allows you to recycle a variety of used dental care and bathroom products and packaging.
How it works
Rather than throwing your toothbrush or toothpaste tube in the trash, you can collect the items in a box at home. Once that box is full, you can have it collected and the products recycled at no cost to you.
The recyclable products are received by TerraCycle. They are then separated by material composition, shredded and melted into hard plastic pellets.
From there they can be remoulded to make new recycled plastic products such as benches, bins, bags and more.
This initiative is manged by Terracycle, but is funded by Tom’s of Maine.
Do be aware that you can’t put all of your oral care and bathroom products in the recycling bin.
What you can place in the recycling box:
- Mouthwash bottles and caps
- Deodorant containers and caps
- Soap packaging
- Floss containers
- Toothpaste tubes and caps
These products can be from any brand. They do not have to be Tom’s of Maine own products.
Whilst this list is not exhaustive, examples of the items you cannot put in the recycling box are:
- Battery operated toothbrushes
- Electric toothbrush handles
- Manual toothbrushes
- Dental floss
If you can, do your bit for the environment.
Participating is simple and free.
Head to the Tom’s of Maine page on the TerraCycle website, join the program and download a free shipping label to send your collections to TerraCycle.
The process is really simple.
