Our Verdict

The bold color, the banana peel handles, and soft food grade silicone make this a brilliant teether for babies and toddlers.

Quite honestly I cannot really fault it.

If you are after a teether and something that eases your infant into brushing, you won’t regret investing in this.

  • Bold design
  • Teether and toothbrush in one
  • Durable
  • Dishwasher safe

  • Attracts the dirt
  • Too large for some babies

The 3 BIG questions about the Baby Banana Toothbrush

If you are short of time, the answers to the following 3 questions should let you know all you need to about the Baby Banana teething toothbrush.

If you want more detail, you can read our full Baby Banana infant teether and toothbrush review further down the page.

1. Is there anything drastically wrong with this toothbrush?

You might be surprised by the unusual design, but something about it makes infants absolutely love it and end up using it for longer than you might have imagined.

The soft silicone really eases teething pain and gets babies experiencing the brushing sensation.

2. Which other brushes should I consider?

Baby Banana is somewhat unique in its design, but there are still a number of excellent baby toothbrushes.

If you are keen to find something that really eases with teething pain and introduces a brushing sensation then the Brush-Baby chewable teether is a really solid option (view on Amazon).

For something a little more traditional, that will not help so much with teething, then there is the Jordan Step 1 toothbrush (view on Amazon).

3. Where’s the best place to buy the Baby Banana Infant Toothbrush?

There is no one best place to buy it from.

For peace of mind, you can buy direct from Baby Banana themselves at $8.49 or you can buy from, Target and Walmart where prices range from $6-9.

You will also find it on ebay, although there are many replicas of this product so make sure you are buying the correct one.

And now for a bit more detail…

Any experienced parent will tell you that teething is a phase of growing up that babies have to go through.

Whilst nobody can tell you quite what the discomfort is like most compare it to adult toothache, or ask somebody who has had wisdom tooth pain!

Therefore your little one will look to find anything they can to ease that pain, and chewing on something tends to be the solution.

Chewing is a really effective technique to help ease the pain as it “distracts” the brain from the pain messages being sent there. Think about when you band your head and then straight away go to rub it.

Baby Banana is a slightly unusual but highly effective option, which not only eases teething but introduces the concept of teeth brushing too.

Variants of this toothbrush

Baby Banana is one of the best known brands, particularly within the USA as they offer a range of teething and dental care products for babies and toddlers.

It began back in 2001, but the range has expanded since.

The banana shaped infant toothbrush that you see in the photos is available in 3 colors, yellow, pink and blue.  It is the color of the skin/peel that changes on each.

However, Baby Banana the brand have other similar products including Corn Cob and sharky infant toothbrush, along with Octo-Teether, Baby Banana Toddler Teether and the Smoothie Soothers teethers.

You can see their official range of products here.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 1

It is the original Baby Banana teether toothbrush that I am reviewing here.

However, what I want to draw your attention to is the number of copycat imitations and just downright fake products that exist on the market today.

At first glance, they look like the original Baby Banana, but they are quite often made by or branded differently.

Now I am not commenting on the legality of these, but many parents have bought these products believing they are the original when they are in fact made by other companies.

I won’t list any specific examples but the quality can vary.  Some will be very good and like the original, but many will be cheaper, lower quality options that are simply not made to last like the original.

In some cases, it is possible that a type of plastic, that isn’t completely safe to be in your baby’s mouth, is used. For this reason, it is best to stick to well known own-brand, or specific branded products.

At the time of writing Baby Banana is made in the USA and distributed by a company called Live-Right LLC, as shown on the back of the packaging. This is something to look out for, as is the Baby Banana branding on the back of the toothbrush, if you want the original.

Pro & Cons

Here are what I believe to be the advantages and disadvantages to this infant teether toothbrush.

The Positives

  • Design – The fun design and bold colors seem to really appeal to the young audience.
  • Teether & toothbrush – It is essentially 2 products in 1.  It eases the discomfort whilst getting babies used to the brushing sensation.
  • Durable – The food grade silicone is hard wearing, flexible and safe for the teeth and gums of babies.
  • Dishwasher safe – It can be cleaned and sanitized by being put in the dishwasher.
  • Peel handles – The “peel” handles give a place for the baby to grip onto but for you to attach a pacifier clip if you desire.

The Negatives

  • Size – Designed for 3-12 month olds, for smaller babies it might be a little too large in the mouth
  • Attracts the dirt – The silicone acts like a magnet for dirt, dust, and hair if dropped on the floor.

Design, usability, clean & general use

Yes, this is a teether and toothbrush rolled into one product, that is specifically designed to look like a banana.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 3

Quite different to most comparable products, something about it just seems to work with babies.

From the moment my little one saw it, despite appearing to be quite happy with an alternative type of teether, he grabbed it and began chewing.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 4

Perhaps it is the bold colors, the unique design or quite simply that the silicone material really is that soothing and pleasant to chew on.

I am reviewing the original yellow colored banana, but there is a pink and pale blue colored option too.

Made from food grade silicone, it is completely safe for children to put in their mouth and chew on.

The material used is Bisphenol-A (BPA) free. BPA is a chemical found in plastics that some studies have found can interfere with human hormones, although the FDA U.S. Food & Drug Administration believes that BPA in plastic is not a concern. In any case, Baby Banana is BPA free!

The banana flexes in a way that there is virtually no chance of your baby giving themself an oral injury, and all edges of the banana are rounded and smooth to the touch.

Designed for babies aged 3 months through to 12 months old, this is not only a first toothbrush but a teether that they can chew on when their teeth come through and help ease and distract them from the discomfort.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 5

Smaller babies may find the shape, size, and design to be a little much, but by 6 months old most will find it is an ideal size.

2 handles or what is really the ‘peel’ of the banana skin give a point for little hands to hold onto but are also holes through which as a parent or guardian you can use to place fingers through for a good hold of the banana and use it in more of a traditional toothbrush fashion.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 6

These handles do also allow for you to attach a pacifier clip to it, reducing the change of your little one losing the Baby Banana.

There is a slight bend to the banana which I believe helps with angle and reach within the baby’s mouth also mimics an actual banana shape too.

On the back is where you will find the Baby Banana branding.

The bristles at the top of the toothbrush are larger than those on a more conventional manual brush but they are soft and flexible and generally hard wearing.

Unless you lose it or it becomes damaged, there should be no need to replace this until the child is about 1 years old.

The silicone bristles might not be everyone’s preference but they work often in a more subtle way than regular toothbrush bristles.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 8

You can’t let a child chew on a regular manual brush, but you can this.

They will chew for quite some time, many minutes at a time.

Although you don’t get the typical brushing motion, unless you intervene, with each chew the bristles are being pressed onto and swept (to some degree) over the teeth and gums, helping manage plaque and bacteria.

The pressure and sensation also gets your little one used to the feeling of brushing.

You can use the Baby Banana like a normal toothbrush, to help get that overall clean, with or without toothpaste.

There are no markers for how much paste to use, but as guidance, you only need a smear.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 9

Remember to clean the tops, fronts, and backs of the teeth as well as passing it over the tongue, exposed gum and inside of the cheeks too.

There is some differing opinion between professionals, but most will agree that whilst it is necessary to brush/clean a child’s teeth under the age of 1 years, it is not absolutely essential to get the perfect clean. This is particularly true if you avoid sugars in your child’s diet.

At this age, it is more about encouragement to use a toothbrush and get used to the brushing sensation, than perfecting the technique and coverage.

Many children do not like having their teeth cleaned and 2 minutes of brushing might be a bigger challenge than you are up to everyday, twice a day.

Of course, aim to achieve this, but if throughout the day they are chewing on this brush, then it is actually helping somewhat.

You can even use this in conjunction with another manual brush if you prefer.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 10

Whilst I didn’t dislike it when I took control of the brush, the size of the head and shape makes it a little more difficult to control that the smaller heads of a more regular shaped toothbrush.

Unlike that manual brush through, the bristles will not split, fray or even come loose like then can on other products.

Teething naturally causes children to dribble and the banana gets quite wet when in use.

Compared to some other silicone products I have tried, this seems to attract the dirt more.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 11

As you probably know babies like to experiment and throwing teethers on the floor is a favorite.

This teether somehow manages to pick up more muck and debris and needs a good clean if it finds the floor.

We have a dog in our house, which probably does not help matters, but the Brush-Baby chewable teether just doesn’t seem to have the hair stick quite so much.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 12

You can celebrate knowing though that to sanitize this, you can just throw it in the dishwasher.  It is designed to resist the heat and is a convenient sanitation process.

All told it is an effective toothbrush that kids seem to love because the chewable design helps with the discomfort of teething too.

Summary of design, usability, clean & general use

  • Shaped like a banana that is mid peel
  • Comes in yellow, pink and blue color options
  • Made from food grade silicone
  • BPA free
  • Designed and made in the USA
  • Soft to the touch and flexes, so as not to cause oral injury
  • Suitable for babies ages 3-12 months
  • Might be a bit big for some smaller babies initially
  • “Peel” offers handles for parents, babies or pacifier clips to hold onto.
  • Seems to attack dust, much and hair more than similar products if it hits the floor
  • Dishwasher safe

Price & where to buy

I have included links to buying options here at the start of the review.

In the section below, I discuss the price more generally and in relation to similar products.

You can buy from Walmart and Target cheaper than you can directly from Baby Banana themselves.

Ebay is another possible option to buy form, but make sure you are buying the correct product as there are many replicas of this one.

The retail price is $8.49, but you can pay as little as $6 or over $9.  The average price seems to be around $7.50

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 13

This is cheaper than most competing products and is in my mind good value.

Designed for 3-12 month olds, you should not need to replace it within that period, like you might a traditional toothbrush, because it is made from food grade silicone, that is more durable, with less need for replacement.

Compared to the cost of manual brushes such as Jordan’s step 0 brush that I like, it is competitively priced.

A Jordan’s brush is around $4 and would need to be replaced 3 times, during the 9 month time frame that the Baby Banana lasts for, so that would total around $12.

A few extra dollars and you don’t get the benefit that the infant can even chew on the Jordan’s brush like they can the Baby Banana infant teether.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 14

Whilst it is hard to say for sure, as each infant is different, the design of this toothbrush and teether does seem to engage babies in a way few others do, so long term value gotten from this is pretty good.

A polite reminder that whilst there is no issue buying similar products, there are many fakes/copycat products online that you might believe are original, when they are not.

Please note that all prices quoted are approximates and will vary based on location, supplier and time of purchase.  These figures were correct at the time of writing and should not be relied upon as hard fact, but used as a guide during your decision process.

Summary of price & where to buy

  • Retails for $8.49
  • Can be bought from $6 through to $9
  • Averages at about $7.50
  • Cheaper than when compared to manual brushes over the same time period

Reliability & long term use

Only long term testing can really say how well a product lasts, but if I waited too long I would never be able to offer a review to you.

My 10 month old has been putting this teether through its paces for the last 6 weeks or so.

Having read the reports of many other parents, it seems that those who have used it for longer are very pleased.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 15

It feels very durable and certainly doesn’t feel cheap or thin to the touch.

My baby has 4 rather effective teeth and there are no puncture wounds to the teether.

There are complaints online, but these appear for the most part to be limited to those imitation/copycat products rather than the Baby Banana original.

Baby Banana Infant Teether Review 16

I have no concerns over the durability of this product and should you pre or post purchase you can contact Baby Brush by emailing [email protected]

Parents will know that many products geared towards children can be a real assault on the senses in terms of color.

The bright yellow peel is indeed very eye catching and caught my youngster’s attention from the moment I unwrapped it.

Made from food grade silicone it is soft, flexible and has certainly won the approval of my son.

He has chewed on it for many hours over the weeks since giving it to him and he seems happier for having it than some other products.

The design does mean when dropped by a child it picks up a lot of muck, but it can be easily cleaned and its banana design is easy to spot amongst other toys and stuff you have to carry.

It does not encourage traditional brushing in the way that some other brushes might, but at this age it is ok.

Quite honestly I cannot really fault it.

If you are after a teether and something that eases your infant into brushing, you won’t regret investing in this.
