Oral-B Stages Power Review

Oral-B Stages Power Review 1

Our Verdict

The design and inclusion of kids favourite TV and film characters makes brushing more fun.

Really good value this brush is, you won’t feel like you are wasting a whole load of money.

The battery life could be better, there could too be a battery status icon, but these are small niggles in the scheme of things.

  • 1 cleaning mode
  • Built-in timer
  • Design – engaging colours and grippy
  • A small round brush head
  • Disney app
  • Value for money

  • No 30 second pacer
  • Battery life/status
  • Associated smartphone app does not rely on actual connection to toothbrush

The 3 BIG questions about the Oral-B Stages Power

If you are short of time, the answers to the following 3 questions should let you know all you need to about the Oral-B Stages Power kids electric toothbrush.  If I have missed something, let me know in the comments.

If you want more detail, you can read or watch my full Oral-B Stages Power kids electric toothbrush review further down the page.

1. Is there anything drastically wrong with this toothbrush?

Not at all, in fact given the price you are getting a pretty decent electric toothbrush ideally suited to your children.

The stages power has several desirable features that encourage kids to brush for the right amount of time and take better care of their teeth.

2. Which other brushes should I consider?

Whilst there is very little wrong with this brush for the price, investing in the Philips Sonicare for Kids Connected HX6321/03 is a smart move.

The Sonicare is better in many ways and will easily pay off for parents and guardians like yourself.

3. Where is the best place to buy the Oral-B Stages toothbrush?

Amazon, Shaver Store, Woolworths and Harvey Norman are my recommendations.

More stores both online and offline do stock these models, but you can generally be assured of good availability and prices from these larger retailers.

Video Review

The following video is the UK version of the Stages Power. Aside from the price and inclusion of the toothpaste. The general message is the same.

Oral-B Stages Power Kids Electric Toothbrush Review

And now for a bit more detail….

Oral-B Stages Power is an electric toothbrush specifically designed with children in mind.

Unlike a regular toothbrush adults might use, these have been adapted to appeal to the younger audience with bright colours, interactive options and some of their favourite characters from TV and film.

Variants of this toothbrush

There are 2 variants of the Stages Power at the time or review.

The brush features and capabilities are the same but the handle colour and characters differ.

The brush’s price and availability will vary between retailers but the main options are:

  • Oral-B Stages Power kids – Star Wars
  • Oral-B Stages Power kids – Disney Frozen

There are also potentially ‘Gift Packs’ which include a tube of Pro-Expert Stages toothpaste with the relevant characters on it. However, these are not as widely stocked as the brush only.

What’s in the box?

In this review we are taking a look at one of the gift pack options:

  • 1 x Oral-B Stages Power kids electric toothbrush – Disney Frozen
  • 1 x Kids brush head
  • 1 x Charging station
  • 1 x Oral-B Pro-Expert Stages toothpaste
  • Documentation

Key Features

  • Oral-B Oscillating & rotating  movement
  • Rechargeable battery
  • 5 days battery life
  • Small, soft brush head for children
  • Suitable for children 3+

Pro & Cons

Here are what I consider to be the pros and cons of the Stages Power toothbrush.

The Positives

  • 1 cleaning mode – A simple no nonsense toothbrush.  Easy to use with 1 cleaning mode.
  • Timer – A 2 minute timer is built into the brush handle to encourage brushing for the right amount of time.
  • Design– The handle has a tapered profile, making it easy to hold as it fits in your child’s hand comfortably. This is helped by the large grip.
  • Colours – Bright and colourful to engage children
  • Brush heads – Small round brush head to effectively clean the teeth and that is easy to move around the tight spaces of the mouth.
  • App – The accompanying smartphone app provides an interactive and reward based experience to encourage longer brushing.
  • Value for money – It is a fairly cheap electric toothbrush and hard to complain about what you get for the money.

The Negatives

  • No 30 second pacer – No quadpacer to encourage you to brush the teeth evenly.
  • Battery status – No indication of how much power is in the brush apart from the slowing motor. Premium models have an LED for the battery.
  • Battery life – 5 days of battery life. Pretty weak in comparison to some other models.
  • App – Despite an accompanying app no direct communication between the brush and the smartphone.

Design, usability, clean & general use

The Stages Power is made up of 2 key components, the brush handle that contains the battery and the motor and the detachable brush head.

In the box, you will also get a user guide and a charging stand.  If you have pick up one of the ‘gift pack’ bundles you get a tube of toothpaste too.

The brush handle is a rather bold colour.  As this is the Disney Frozen variant, the main body is a blue colour whilst the rubber grips on the handle are a purple/pink colour.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 6

Other variants may have a red rubber grip, notably Star Wars.

A tapered design the handle has, it is thinnest at the bottom, where on the very base is a recess into which the prong on the charging stand fits.  More on the charging stand in the battery section of the review.

Oral-B Stages Power Charging Recess

As you run up the handle of the kids oral b electric toothbrush, it moves from a round/cylindrical shape to almost oval by the time you reach the neck of the brush handle.

The front of the handle is mainly a smooth touch plastic but is accented by the large rubber grip around the power button, the one and only button on the handle.

The rubber is a deep pink/purple in colour and can too be found on two thirds of the rear of the handle too.  The grip on the rear has a series of raised ridges that help the fingers grip to, particularly when wet.

The sizing works well for children’s hands to hold onto and the extensive grip should mean that for the most part its held securely.

Oral-B Stages Power Rubber Grip

On the front of the brush, toward the bottom is a small Oral-B/Braun logo whilst regulatory icons adorn the same area on the rear of the brush.

A small rubber protrusion on the neck of the brush handle at the rear helps the brush stay in one place if laid flat on a worktop.

Protruding from the brush handle is a metal shaft that feeds into the motor found inside the handle.

It is to this that the detachable brush head attaches.

Oral-B Stages Power Brush Handle & Brush Head

The heads simply slide on and off and should be changed every 3 month’s, or sooner if the bristles are frayed or show signs of wear.

This brush is designed for children aged 3 years and upwards.

A single head is supplied, it is slightly smaller and has softer bristles than a regular adult brush head, better suited to the smaller mouths of the intended user.

There is just one style of brush head.  Not lots of different styles like you can get with the full size adult brush heads.

Although this is supplied with a child’s brush head, if you wanted you can put full size brush heads on this handle.

The head itself has a number of blue coloured bristles on it.  These are known as indicator bristles, they fade to a pale blue/white over a 3 month period as the head is used.  It is a visual clue that the head may need changing.

Oral-B Stages Power Brush Head Close Up

In this instance, the body of the brush head is a pink/purple plastic and is wrapped with a sticker with a Frozen theme.

You will want to ensure you get the correct oral b stages replacement heads to match the theme of the handle.

Oral-B Stages Power Full Length Shot

The handle itself is water resistantand is designed to survive everyday use, exposure to water, toothpaste, and saliva.

The handle should not be immersed in water though, so whilst a rinse under the tap is fine, a trip in the bath is not.

Sealed, the battery and motor inside the handle of the oral b stages toothbrush cannot be accessed.

The brush has just 1 cleaning mode which will have your children’s teeth looking great.

Offering up to 7,600 movements per minute, this brush is a little less powerful than you might use as an adult but will bring a real benefit to the kids teeth as the bristles sweep across the teeth and gums removing plaque and bacteria.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 7

Compared to a manual brush, these bristles are going to pass over the tooth surfaces a lot more and increase the chances of sweeping away bad bacteria.

Brushing for 2 minutes twice a day is the recommendation of dental professionals and the Stages Power has a couple of features that should help your children do just this.

If the bright colours and designs are not enough, built into the handle is a timer.

The timer begins the moment the power button on the handle is pressed.  When the 2 minutes time is reached, there are a series of brief pauses in the brush head movements, which acts as a signal that the time has passed and the child can end the clean.

Oral-B Stages Power Power Button Close Up

There is no quad/30 second pacer like you get on some brushes, which is a shame. Such a feature would help encourage kids to brush their teeth more evenly.

Now another great feature is that there is a smartphone app available for Android and iOS that can be downloaded.

The Disney Magic Timer is pretty clever in what it does and what it offers.

It is one app that is designed to work with the range of different Stages Power brushes.

Once loaded on the phone, from within the app, which is free, you scan the brush/packaging using the phone’s camera and it intelligently detects what theme to apply to the app.  In this case a Frozen theme.

A nice touch is that you can set up different user profiles.  So for example if you have 2 children and each has a different brush with a different theme, the app changes that theme as and when you load into each child’s profile.

The idea is that the app is used at the same time as brushing.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 8

On-screen there is a countdown timer, an upbeat song is played and graphics are slowly revealed as the child brushes.

Providing they brush for the full 2 minutes then the graphic is shown in full and a reward is then gained.  This is added to a virtual sticker book.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 9

The principle is that the child is motivated by getting the stickers in the book.  Completing the book is only achieved through regular brushing.

The app keeps a log of how often the teeth are cleaned via an on screen calendar too.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 10

Even if you have a super proactive child who tries to brush too often, the app says that you have brushed already and you should do it again in the evening or the morning.

As this countdown timer is shown on screen it does also show to change where the child is brushing in the mouth, thanks to animated graphics at 30 second intervals, thus making up for the pacer that is not built into the brush itself.

Sadly, the phone and brush have no Bluetooth pairing like some other models such as one from Sonicare or other Oral-B models, that are designed for adults.

What this means is that the brush and app are not in sync.  So, in theory, the app could be counting down but your child not actually have the brush switched on and be brushing.

In practice, I believe they will go almost hand in hand and as a parent you will likely be present, but you can probably understand my concern.

The app works and is engaging, but as a parent you might have concerns about having to use or hand over your smartphone as the kids brush their teeth.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 11

Ideally the phone needs to be positioned in a way that child can see the screen whilst keeping the device away from danger.  Some sort of holder would be nice, but this is not included.

Other nice touches within the app include tutorial videos for kids too.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 12

Of course, the results of this brush vary from child to child and how motivated they are by this sort of approach, but our own hands on testing suggests that most children love this and find brushing much more enjoyable and more importantly brush for longer.

If you get the gift pack like I have here, you get the tube of toothpaste included too which is a nice touch.  This can be purchased separately.  Formulated for kids, it helps with their dental health.

Oral-B Stages Power Packaging

This whole package works well together to encourage a better brushing routine for your child.

The Oral-B kids electric toothbrush comes with a 2 year warranty and should in all likelihood last longer than this, but you have that peace of mind.

Summary of design, usability, clean & general use

  • Bold coloured handle
  • Lots of grips on the brush
  • Interchangeable brush heads
  • Comes with a child’s brush head
  • Adult brush heads do fit onto the handle
  • 1 cleaning mode
  • Built-in timer
  • No quadpacer
  • Disney Timer app works well with lots of features
  • Encourages kids to brush for longer
  • Brush does not pair with the app
  • Water resistant handle
  • 2 year warranty

Battery life

A long battery life is not exactly essential, but it would be beneficial if the rechargeable internal battery lasted more than 5 days without needing to be charged.

You can get 20 minutes of usage time from the brush, that is 10 cleaning sessions, each lasting 2 minutes according to Oral-B.

However, in my hand- on testing I achieved double this.  Why? I am not sure.  But I managed a total of 44 minutes of usage time from the brush, which is equivalent to 22 cleaning sessions or 11 days of usage time.  Perhaps not all brushes are created equal.

What I suspect this means is that the minimum usage time will be 20 minutes and there is a very good chance you will get longer from it.

As a parent you have enough things to juggle and checking the toothbrush is charged is just another thing to add to the list, so if the run-time is longer than 20 minutes then great.

Although you might want to teach the kids to put the brush on the charging stand, they don’t always do it do they.

No doubt, a routine will be formed by you to ensure it is charged.

It is perfectly safe to leave the brush sat on the charging stand that comes supplied, so it is always topped up, but a battery status icon would also be useful to show if there is 80%, 20% or 10% left, but sadly no such indicator is available on this brush.

Oral-B Stages Power back of brush

Many toothbrushes today come with Lithium-Ion batteries which tend to offer double the battery life, but they do have a knock on effect to the price, this brush has a Nickel Metal Hydride battery.  You should be aware that this battery is sealed inside and is not user removable.

Personally I would pay a few pounds more for extra battery life, but I can’t really grumble with what you get for the money.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 13

The charging stand supplied is white in colour and has a 2 pin connector that powers from shaver sockets found in a bathroom.

If you do not have such a socket, you will need to purchase a 2 to 3 pin adapter to allow you to charge it form a regular 3 pin socket.

When it is connected, the toothbrush sits upright on the charging stand, with the prong on the stand fitting into the recess on the bottom of the brush.

If the brush is completely flat, it will take up to 16 hours to charge it fully.

Compatible with 220-240v power supplies, if you travel with the brush, you may need a voltage adapter.

If you already own an Oral-B electric toothbrush, this is the same charging stand that is supplied with other models.  So you need not have different charging stands in the bathroom if you and other members of the family are using Oral-B brushes.

Summary of battery life

  • 20 minutes of usage time or 5 days usage based on 2 cleans a day
  • Own testing achieve up to 44 minutes, double the suggested life
  • No battery status icon
  • Can be left on the charger
  • Takes about 16 hours to charge fully
  • A charger included in the box
  • Works on 220- 240 volts

Price & where to buy

I have included links to buying options here at the start of the review.

In the section below, I discuss the price more generally and in relation to similar products.

The Oral-B Stages range of brushes vary in price, depending on where you buy it from.

The recommended retail price of the Stages Power is $50.

However, the good news is that you do not need to pay this much. In fact, I really do not encourage you to pay anything more than about $30.

This is because the majority of Oral-B brushes sell for up to 50% less than their retail price. So with that logic the Kids Stages Power can be purchased for around $25.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 14

Brush heads need to be replaced every 3 months on average and they will normally cost about $7 each on average.

Here at Electric Teeth, we like to work out a rough average cost to purchase and own electric toothbrushes.

With a typical working life of 5+years, we work out the cost over a 3 year period for consistency.

Priced at full retail price the Stages Power would work out at $120 or $0.11 per day.

At the discounted price of $25, it costs $95 or $0.09 per day.

This excludes the cost of toothpaste, water, and electricity, but you get the idea.

All told I think this is a very fair price for what you get.

Although the brush is not perfect, when considering the features for the money, it’s a reasonable option.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 15

Please note that all prices quoted are approximates and will vary based on location, supplier and time of purchase.  These figures were correct at the time of writing and should not be relied upon as hard fact, but used as a guide during your decision process.

Summary of price & where to buy

  • Recommended retail price of $50
  • Generally available from $25
  • Brush heads approximately $7 each
  • Works out at around $0.09 per day over 3 years
  • Good value all things considered

Reliability & long term use

As one of the leading brands within the electric toothbrush market you can expect the Stages Power to be well built and last and survive a lot of what it will be exposed too.

Here at Electric Teeth, although we do not have any specialist testing equipment or tools to really test the brush to its maximum we have our experience and knowledge of other brushes to make comparison and comment on.

The overall build quality and construction of the brush is very good and this is thanks in part to Oral-B’s tried and tested approach and refinements over the years.

Oral-B Stages Power Review 16

The weakest point is the battery.  After repeated charges and discharges it can fail and should it, they are not easy to replace.  But, by the time this happens, you will likely have gotten your value from the kids oral-b electric toothbrush.

Backed by a 2 year warranty, should something go wrong, it can be returned for repair.  Although in truth, the cost is so low it might not be economically viable.

To prolong the life of any brush giving it a rinse and a wipe down to remove grime that builds up is a must.

Getting kids to brush their teeth for longer can be a real challenge and the Oral-B Stages Power has many of the tricks necessary to achieve just this and I think it is fair to say that even the most troublesome toothbrusher will do better with this in hand.

The interactive nature and colourful designs with favourite TV and film characters makes brushing more fun and interesting.

Really good value this brush is, you won’t feel like you are wasting a whole load of money.

The battery life could be better, there could too be a battery status icon, but these are small niggles in the scheme of things.

If niggles like this get to you too, the best brush to go for, although more expensive is the Sonicare for Kids Connected HX6321/03.
